Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs)

The Basics
 

1 STC = 1 megawatt-hour (MWh) of renewable energy or avoided energy use

The value of a Small-scale Technology Certificate (STC, formerly called Renewable Energy Certificate or a REC) can fluctuate daily.  Their market value is determined by the supply and demand situation at any one point.  Importantly for you, the discount that can be claimed on an approved solar hot water system can be calculated by

The Detail

The Australian Government set a Renewable Energy Target (RET) with the aim of sourcing 20 per cent of Australia's electricity supply from renewable energy by 2020. This scheme is a market-based mechanism where by parties who buy wholesale electricity are required to meet a Renewable Power Percentage (RPP) each year, a requirement they can fulfil by purchasing Small or Large scale Technology Certificates at market price. 

The Office of the Renewable Energy Regulator (ORER) oversee the administration of the STC generation for Solar Water Heaters (SWH). Models listed in the Register of SWHs have:

1. Received Australian and New Zealand Standard certification 2712-2002.
2. Been tested for performance under different laboratory climatic conditions to mimic performance around Australia. These are postcode zoned into four regions around Australia per diagram.

All SWHs we sell are accredited with AS2712 via a 3rd party body. This standard specifies the requirements for the quality of the manufactured product including durability and safety.
